Walgreens Boots (NASDAQ:WBA) is currently exploring strategic options for its specialty pharmacy business, Shields Health Solutions, which it acquired three years ago. According to sources cited in a Bloomberg report, the business could be valued at $4 billion in a potential sale. Healthcare companies and private equity firms are anticipated to express interest in acquiring the unit.
Although Walgreens Boots has not yet made a final decision on whether to proceed with the sale, the evaluation is part of the company’s ongoing assessment of its portfolio. The pharmacy giant had previously announced its intention to acquire the remaining 30% stake of Shields Health Solutions for approximately $1.37 billion in September 2022, following a majority investment of $970 million made in September 2021.
This potential divestiture coincides with reports that Walgreens is also considering the sale of its UK Boots drugstore chain, valued at approximately £7 billion ($8.8 billion). In November, the company entered into an agreement with insurer Legal & General to transfer responsibility for the UK Boots pharmacy chain’s £5 billion legacy pension plan.
Walgreens is set to hold its annual meeting on Thursday, where further decisions and strategies for its business units may be discussed.
